Recently, his 50th film titled Maharaja hit the screens. It is a crime suspense thriller movie, directed by Nithilan Saminathan. Maharaja released extensively over 1915 screens across the world. Maharaja had a good opening, earning 4.70 crore at the Indian box office. Then it went on to collect over Rs 32.6 crore worldwide in three days. Today, on its 4th day, the film has collected Rs 27.50 crore at the Indian box office, based on reports. Maharaja has reportedly grossed over Rs 40 crore worldwide reportedly.
Maharaja’s story revolves around a man named Maharaja (played by Vijay Sethupathi). He is in his late forties and lives with his daughter named Jothi (played by Sachana Nemidas). Maharaja, all of a sudden one day, goes to the police to file a missing report for ‘Lakshmi’. It turns out Lakshmi is not a person, but their house’s dustbin. The police initially think he is a crazy man and laughs at him, but soon realises there’s a hidden truth behind the lost dustbin. What follows next in this thrilling drama is what the film is about.
Vijay Sethupathi was last seen in Sriram Raghavan’s film Merry Christmas. He starred in the film opposite actress Katrina Kaif. It was released in theatres on January 12. Merry Christmas received mixed response from audience and critics.
In a promotional interview for the film this year, Vijay Sethupathi was asked what is the secret behind his fearless choices as an actor. To this, he replied by stating how he met his wife. Vijay Sethupathi added that he asked his wife, Jessy Sethupathi, to marry him within a week of just chatting online. Vijay Sethupathi further said he married Jessy five months after coming back to India thereafter. He said that he hadn’t even given much thought to such a big decision like marriage in life, then why would he be afraid before choosing a role or film.
