Mohanlal Quits as AMMA President: Mammootty allegedly met Mohanlal before he resigned from AMMA and 'supported' his decision to step down.

Mohanlal discussed resigning as the President of AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists) with his fellow actor Mammootty before he shared the news with the press, a new report has claimed. On Tuesday, Mohanlal left the Malayalam film industry in shock after he decided to quit as AMMA’s President. His 17-member executive committee also followed his lead and resigned their positions in the association. Hours after the news broke, a report has hinted that Mammootty was aware of the shocking move.

Popular Malayalam news publication, Manorama, claimed that Mohanlal held a private consultation with Mammootty. The report also claimed that Mammootty ‘supported’ his decision. Mammootty allegedly agreed that it was the ‘best course of action.’ The report also claimed that there were attempts made to urge Mohanlal to reconsider his decision but the actor was unwilling to budge. News18 couldn’t verify the claims at the time of reporting.

On Tuesday, Mohanlal issued a statement to press that he was stepping down as the President of AMMA. “AMMA has decided to disperse the executive committee on moral grounds in the light of allegations made by some actors against some of the committee members. A new committee will be formed after an election within two months,” the statement read.

The association informed that within two months the general body meeting of the association will be called to select the new governing body. “We hope that a leadership that is capable of revamping and strengthening the association will take over soon. Thankful to everyone for pointing out our errors,” it added.

Mohanlal’s decision came amid the ongoing sexual harassment allegations in the Malayalam film industry.
