Liam Payne, former One Direction star, has tragically died at the age of 31 after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires. Local police confirmed the incident occurred at a hotel on Costa Rica Street in Palermo.
According to reports from local newspapers La Nacion and Clarin, police were summoned to the hotel in Buenos Aires’ Palermo neighborhood after receiving an emergency call about “an aggressive man who might be under the influence of drugs and alcohol.” Paramedics later confirmed the death of Liam Payne, who was discovered in an interior hotel patio, as detailed in the news reports.
Who Was Liam Payne?
Liam Payne rose to fame as part of the iconic boyband One Direction, alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan. The group formed in 2010 on The X Factor and announced a hiatus in 2015. Payne later pursued a solo career, releasing his debut album LP1 in 2019, followed by Teardrops in March this year.
As a member of One Direction, Liam Payne was part of one of the most influential boy bands in modern history. The group is recognised as one of the highest-selling boy bands ever, with over 70 million records sold globally. After a successful run from 2010 to 2016, One Direction announced an indefinite hiatus, allowing all five members to pursue solo careers.
Payne launched his solo career in 2017 with the hit single “Strip That Down,” featuring Migos member Quavo, which reached the top 10 in the US and peaked at No. 3 in the UK. He released his debut album, LP1, in December 2019, which debuted at No. 17 in the UK. Earlier this year, he dropped his latest single, “Teardrops,” along with an acoustic version.
Liam was candid about his battles with alcohol and suicidal thoughts. Just last year, he shared that he had achieved over three months of sobriety, stating, “I’m sober now, over 100 days. I feel amazing, really, really good, and the support from the fans has been incredible, so I’m super happy.”
He is survived by his son, born in 2017, whom he shared with singer Cheryl Cole.
