Ryan Reynolds Reveals Paying Deadpool Writers From His Salary

Ending the long wait of Marvel fans, Deadpool & Wolverine is ready to hit theatres. One of the highly anticipated films starring the iconic pairing of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, Deadpool & Wolverine’s production, began in May last year but got delayed due to the Hollywood strikes. Eventually, the filming resumed in late winter. However, this is not the only hurdle that the franchise has faced since it came to the MCU table. From struggling to find a story to almost being shelved, Deadpool 3 has had its own share of challenges.

While the lead actors, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, have time and again shared the story behind the film’s conceptualisation, another unknown detail has come to light. Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds had to pay out of his pockets to keep the screenwriters on the sets.

Opening up about the original film’s humble beginnings, Reynolds spoke to The New York Times and shared how he had spent a decade to get it made, even paying from his own salary. “No part of me was thinking when ‘Deadpool’ was finally greenlit that this would be a success. I even let go of getting paid to do the movie just to put it back on the screen. They wouldn’t allow my co-writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick on set, so I took the little salary I had left and paid them to be on set with me so we could form a de facto writers room,” the actor revealed.

Mentioning it was sort of a “lesson,” Reynolds shared that the film had no time or money, but he invested a lot in every micro-detail. “I remembered wanting to feel that more—not just on ‘Deadpool,’ but on anything,” he said.

Reynolds’ generosity was not unheard of. Earlier, writers Wernick and Reese disclosed how Reynolds personally financed Deadpool (2016) to ensure the film received top-notch quality control. Speaking on the AMC show Geeking Out, the screenwriting duo said, “We were on set every day. Interestingly, Ryan wanted us there. We were on the project for six years. It was really a core creative team of us, Ryan, and the director, Tim Miller. Fox, interestingly, wouldn’t pay for us to be on set. Ryan Reynolds paid out of his own money, out of his own pocket.”

The actor’s gestures underscore how he had literally nourished the Deadpool films to the nines, beginning from the development stage to promotion.
