Sanjay Leela Bhansali: 5 Memorable Songs from his films

​Filmmaker, screenwriter and music director Sanjay Leela Bhansali turns 58this February 24. Known for his dazzling epics that are often set in Rajasthan, where he hails from, Bhansali secured critical acclaim with his debut feature Khamoshi: The Musical. He followed it up with commercially and critically successful films such as Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas, Black, Guzaarish and Padmaavat among others. Bhansali is also known for composing music for his films since Guzaarish. Below, we take a look at five memorable songs from his films.

Tadap Tadap (1999)

This Ismail Darbar composition from the film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam can be considered one of the best odes to love and heartbreak in Hindi cinema. Singer K.K. and Dominique Cerejo beautifully render the soul-stirring lyrics by Mehboob. The track is picturised on Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Salman Khan whose characters suffer the pangs of separation.

Maar Daala (2002)

This song, performed by Kavita Krishnamurthy has remained one of the most popular songs from Bhansali’s films. The song is picturised on Madhuri Dixit’s Chandramukhi performing a Mujra dance that is being attended by Shahrukh Khan’s Devdas, who is suffering his separation from Parvati and his rapidly failing health. The music was composed by Ismail Darbar and Monty Sharma, with lyrics by Nusrat Badr.

Udi (2010)

Guzaarish marks the debut of Sanjay Leela Bhansali as a music composer. This sensuous and energetic track is sung powerfully by Sunidhi Chauhan and Shail Hada. The track is picturised on Aishwarya rai Bachchan as she breaks into a passionate dance while seeing a singer perform on stage. The lyrics to the song were written by Turaz.

Nagada Sang Dhol (2012)

This spirited folk track performed by Shreya Ghoshal and Osman Mir was one of the highlights of Bhanshali’s soundtrack to his Romeo and Juliet adaptation, Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela. It was originally translated into Hindi from a Gujarati folk song by Indian poet Jhaverchand Meghani. The lyrics for the film were written by Siddharth-Garima. This is Bhansali’s second soundtrack composition.

Ghoomar (2018)

This folk song based on traditional Rajasthani Ghoomar dances was written by A.M. Turaz and Swaroop Khan. The song, picturised on Deepika Padukone’s character as she performs a Ghoomar dance was sung by Shreya Ghoshal and Swaroop Khan with music composed by Bhansali.
