In the upcoming DC Studios’ reboot led by James Gunn, most DCEU actors haven’t secured any roles. Yet, The Suicide Squad star Sean Gunn has bagged multiple parts in the new DCU. The actor will be playing the role of GI Robot in Creature Commandos and will be reprising his previous role as Weasel. While Sean is expected to bring these CG characters to life in future films, the main focus is on Maxwell Lord. Unlike the character’s portrayal in Wonder Woman 1984, played by Pedro Pascal, Gunn’s version of Maxwell is expected to be less evil, just like the comic book origins. In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Sean spoke about his approach to the character, describing him as more grounded and expressed his intention to play Lord in a more traditional manner.
Without saying much, Sean explained, “I’m not sure I can still technically mention it publicly even though obviously the word is out there. All I can say is that that character is a little bit more grounded as a human being and that’s a character that I’ll tackle in a more traditional way.”
Further, speaking about juggling between multiple roles, Sean Gunn shared insights into playing GI Robot and Weasel in addition to Maxwell Lord. He said, “It’s true that they’re all in the DC Universe so there’s that sort of extra element. But as an actor, I’m well equipped to play a variety of different types of characters. You know I’ve done so many different weird types of things and have three different independent movies starting next week. So there’s a whole bunch of characters that I’m trying to navigate all of them.”
Sean highlighted that characters like the Creature Commandos, whether animated or live-action like Weasel, are primarily CG characters. Discussing the differences between the characters, with GI being a robot, the focus is on movement and voice, which makes them unique from one another. The actor shared that these characters are part of different corners of the DC Universe.
In the comics, Maxwell Lord is initially shown as a business personality and a supporter of superheroes before he turns antagonist and goes against them, using his mind control and manipulation skills. He has crossed paths with several heroes, including the Justice League and his actions have left negative effects in the DC Universe in certain storylines. While the specific details of James Gunn’s plan for Lord remain unclear, there are speculations that Sean Gunn might make an appearance in the Superman movie, where numerous cameos are expected.
