Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s debut series Heeramandi has once again sparked a debate about nepotism, courtesy of his niece Sharmin Segal’s casting in the newly released Netflix series. Sharmin, the daughter of Bella Bhansali Segal and Deepak Segal, plays the role of Alamzeb in the show, which boasts an ensemble cast of acclaimed actors like Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, Shekhar Suman, and Aditi Rao Hydari.
In a video that is going viral on Reddit, Sharmin can be seen reacting to other actresses vying for her role. It all starts with Richa Chadha saying, “He hands over the script quite late into the production. He had called me to his office and asked me to read the script. I don’t know how it was with you guys.” In response, Sharmin says, “Maine Kuch scenes padhi thi. Among all the women, I was the only one who auditioned. I had convinced myself while auditioning that I am going to do the part, although sir hadn’t said anything. He never does. Jo Richa mujhe Bol rahi hai or dusri ladkiyan bhi thi jo mere role ke liye compete kar Rahi thi, mujhe koi idea nahin tha. Mujhe bas maalum tha mujhe Kya karna hai (Richa is saying there were other girls too who were competing for my role – but, I had no idea. I just knew what I had to do).”
To this, Richa retorts, “I know of two.” Sharmin says, “Two? There were probably more but who doesn’t want to work with Sanjay sir? Main bahut lucky hoon Ke mujhe yeh mauka mila (I’m lucky I got the opportunity). As an actor, if you trust your director, it’s the same as winning the lottery.”
Many took to the comments section to call out Sharmin for her alleged ‘arrogance’. One user also pointed at the way she took Richa’s name. “The way she said Reeecha,” read one comment. Another comment read, “The way she called ‘Richaaa’ shows she has zero respect even for her seniors.” A third comment reads, “The girl has zero self awareness. The more she talks, the more unlikable she becomes.”

While Manisha, Sonakshi and Aditi have been getting much love and appreciation for their solid performances, Sharmin has been receiving a volley of criticism for “holding the same expression” throughout the show. A section of the internet claims that “nepotism got her this role”.
