Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna featured the heartbreaking scene in which Abhishek Bachchan’s Rishi informed Rani Mukerji’s Maya about Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘Sexy’ Sam’s death. The scene is tear-jerking but did you know Abhishek Bachchan bawled after the scene was shot? In an interview, Abhishek revealed he broke down after the scene was shot and Karan Johar consoled him but he also ended up crying with them. Jr B added that even Rani Mukerji cried with them even without knowing the reason behind it.
“Karan came and spoke to me (about the scene). Karan, apart from being the world’s worst actor, is so involved in what he’s doing in terms of performance. He still manages through his bad performance to convey what he wants to. I remember he came to me and said, ‘AB, don’t play the scene. Just say it very flatly.’ When it came to thing, I reached out to my pocket and I pulled out this photograph. In my head, as an actor, I am thinking I have to say that he’s dead. When I saw, it was my father’s photograph. It just hit me,” Abhishek shared on Look Who’s Talking With Niranjan in an interview in 2014.
“I looked and thought, wait a second, this is my dad. How can I say he’s dead, he’s not, he’s waiting in the hotel for me. And I say my line. Karan said, ‘cut, got it’. I got up, I went to the side and I just broke down. I remember Karan came next to me, hugged me because he knew, and he broke down. I realised he was thinking about Yash uncle at that point of time and he had written the scene for Yash uncle and I was enacting it for my father. Being the Dharma set it is, Rani came and she’s didn’t know why we were crying and she broke down. Then the ADs broke down. It was a surreal experience,” he added.
Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna marked Abhishek and Amitabh’s third film together. They had previously shared the screen in Bunty Aur Babli (2005) and Sarkar (2005). KANK showed the father-son duo in a different avatar. While their performances got much love, the film had divided opinons. Today, it marks 18 years since its release.
