When Yash Chopra Told Shah Rukh Khan That He Is Giving Up Films: ‘Bohot Ho Gaya’
Back in 2012, on his birth anniversary, the filmmaker shared how he felt "bohot hogaya" after directing Jab Tak Hai Jaan.

Yash Chopra is celebrated as one of India’s greatest filmmakers. He is known for reshaping Indian cinema with iconic films like Chandni, Silsila and Veer Zaara. However, after dominating the industry for decades, there came a moment when he felt it was time to step back. In a 2012 interview with Shah Rukh Khan on his birthday, the legendary director revealed that after finishing Jab Tak Hai Jaan, his heart told him, “Bohot hogaya (It’s enough)”.

Previously, during a chat with Shah Rukh Khan on his birthday, Yash Chopra was asked about his future films after Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Shah Rukh asked, “When is your next film? When is the next one? Because this has been a great experience and I’d like to do it again.” In response, the famed filmmaker provided a highly thoughtful comment, stating that he had never lived his life with planning. Instead, he is guided by his heart. Yash Chopra revealed that his heart felt it was time to step away, signalling the end of an outstanding career.

He said, “Meine life bitayi hai dil mera kya kehta hai. Jab mera dil kuch kahe phir mein logo ki parwah nahi karta. Mera dil kehta hai ‘bohot ho gaya’. (I spent my life listening to my heart. When my heart says something I don’t care what people have to say. My heart says ‘I’ve had enough’).” He added, “I have got lot of love in all these years. I think now the time has come to pay back. I want to help directors, actors, technicians who I could not help all these years.” He added that he wanted to do other things, such as mentor new filmmakers and share his experiences.

Yash Chopra’s journey in the film industry began with humble origins. Arriving in Mumbai after partition with just Rs 200 and a dream of becoming a filmmaker, he initially planned to pursue engineering but was drawn by his passion for cinema. He started his career as an assistant director, working first with I. S. Johar and then with his brother, the renowned director-producer BR Chopra. After a prolific career that spanned decades, Yash Chopra passed away at the age of 80 in Mumbai due to dengue on October 21, 2012.
