Some local reports stated that Basavaraj Patil may join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday. He is known as a big leader in the Marathwada region.

Days before the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections, Congress suffered another major setback in Maharashtra. Former minister and state working president of Congress, Basavaraj Patil Murumkar, has resigned from the party. Earlier, ex-CM Ashok Chavan had quit the grand old party.

Some local reports stated that Patil may join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday. He is known as a big leader in the Marathwada region.

Congress secretary Abhay Salunke said the former minister leaving the party would not have any impact since he was not in touch with the public after his 2019 loss from Ausa Assembly seat

In the recent past, many senior Maharashtra Congress leaders have left the party, including Ashok Chavan, Milind Deora and Baba Siddiqui. While Chavan has joined the BJP, Deora is now with Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena. Both these leaders have been nominated for the Rajya Sabha elections.

On the other hand, Baba Siddiqui has joined the NCP led by deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar.

Who is Basavaraj Patil Murumkar?

Basavaraj Patil, a resident of Murum in Umarga taluka of Dharashiv district, was elected for the first time in the 1999 assembly elections after which he became a minister in the Maharashtra cabinet.

Basavaraj Patil was the Rural Development Minister of Maharashtra from 1999 to 2004. Patil lost in the 2004 elections.

Later, he won from Umarga assembly for the first time but then it was declared a reserved constituency. Therefore, the party nominated him from the Ausa constituency in the 2009 elections.
