Going Out To Celebrate New Year? Security Beefed Up in Delhi, Mumbai | Check Restrictions, Traffic Advisories

If you are heading out to celebrate the new year, you should check out restrictions in your cities and traffic advisories to save yourself from trouble which might dampen your mood.

Several cities across India stepped up their security preparations as hundreds of people will throng markets, restaurants, pubs and hotpots like India Gate and Connaught Place in New Delhi and Gateway of India in Mumbai.

These security measures will be in place to prevent any unwanted situation and ensure smooth regulation of traffic and events across the nation. Strict warnings have also been issued in connection with the consumption of alcohol and drugs.

Major security plans have been put in place in metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru.

From police deployment to traffic advisories, here’s everything that you need to know:

The Delhi Police geared up for the New Year celebrations as over 10,000 personnel will be deployed across the national capital to keep a check on traffic violations.

These officers will work in two shifts, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast) Joy Tirkey. The first shift will start from 5 pm to midnight and the second shift from 12 am to 6 am.

Aside from this, the Delhi Traffic Police will also deploy 250 teams, consisting of 2,500 personnel. These teams will be tasked with checking drunk driving cases on New Year’s Eve.

Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) SS Yadav said that the regulations will take effect from 8 pm on December 31.

Speaking to news agency PTI, Yadav said that to ensure safety of the common man and to prevent hooliganism or traffic violations, they have identified more than 500 vulnerable points.

“Special checking teams will be deployed at 287 major intersections and 233 drunken points (vulnerable points) to detect and prosecute traffic violations,” he said.

Another senior police officer advised people to not indulge in racing or competition with other vehicles. “Especially two-wheeler riders to wear helmets and avoid triple-riding and not indulge in reckless, dangerous or zig-zag driving,” he said.

As high footfall is expected at popular joints in Connaught Place, Lajpat Nagar, Ansal Plaza among others, the Delhi Fire Services has also taken measures to ensure its readiness to handle emergencies.

Delhi Fire Services chief Atul Garg said that 10 to 15 water tenders will be tactically placed during the celebrations.

As per Delhi Traffic Police advisory, no vehicular movement will be allowed in the inner, middle or outer circle of CP except for those with valid access.

Section 144 of the Criminal Code of Procedure (CrPC) will be imposed in Noida and Greater Noida to prevent any unlawful event from taking place and to ensure that not more than five persons assemble at a place at the same time.

Consuming alcohol publicly, holding religious prayers and unauthorised processions have all been banned in the region for two days.

The Gautam Buddh Nagar Police noted that several organisation have planned events including demonstrations, and so the probability of peace disruption cannot be ruled out. In view of this, strict prohibitory measures will be put in place, the police said.

The restrictions will be imposed in the region till January 1.

Traffic advisory has been issued by the Gurugram police for commuters visiting malls and markets on New Year’s eve. Parking restrictions are also in place with the police assigning 10 parking areas to avoid traffic jam.

Police teams will also be posted at several locations to keep a check on drunk driving.

The Bengaluru Police announced strict measures earlier this week, with strict checks on drunk driving, traffic restrictions in key areas across the city.

As large gatherings, motorists and pedestrians are expected at key areas in the city including MG Road, Bridage Road, Residency Road, St Marks Road and Church Street, police said that traffic has been restricted on these majors roads on the nights of December 31 and January 1, 2024.

Major restrictions were imposed around MG Road, Brigade Road, Museum Road, Rest House Rod, Residency Cross Road. No vehicular movement will be allowed, between 8 pm on December 31 to 1 am on January 1, except police and vehicles of essential services.

In order to manage crowds and avoid any unlawful event from taking place, all parties in the city, including at hotels, clubs, and pubs, will be required to conclude by 1 am.

Hotels, clubs and pubs have also been asked to maintain a record of customer details, including their identification and age proofs.

Vehicular movement on all flyovers (except the flyover leading to the international airport) will be prohibited from 11 pm on December 31 to 6 am on January 1 to prevent accidents and crashes.

Mumbai Police has deployed a force of 2,051 officers and 11,500 enforcers across the island city. A total of 22 Deputy Commissioners of Police and 45 Assistant Commissioners of Police have also been deployed to keep a check on the New Year celebrations.

City police said that strict actions will be taken against persons disrupting the public including those driving under alcohol influence, molesting women, operating illegal liquor establishments and selling or consuming drugs, an India Today report said.

As many as 18,000 personnel have been deployed in Chennai city to ensure peaceful New Year celebrations.

Greater Chennai Police Commissioner Sandeep Rai Rathore has directed officials to implement comprehensive security measures to ensure incident-free New Year celebrations.

A press release from the city police noted that people are prohibited from entering the sea starting from Sunday evening to Monday. Coastal areas including Marina, Santhome, Elliots, and Neelankarai will be monitored, it added.

Bursting of firecrackers in all locations, including residential areas, has also been banned.

Stringent actions will be taken against those involved in consumption or selling of drugs, not only during New Year but around the year, Telangana Director General of Police Ravi Gupta told India Today TV.

Gupta said that special drug test kits will be put to use to check whether people are under the influence, adding that, surprise inspections at pubs and other party places are already being conducted.

The DGP said that about 33 specially trained dogs will be deployed to sniff out drugs during these surprise inspections.

People are requested to not create any disturbance or inconvenience for others, he said.
