Shreyas Iyer Draws Level With Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting For Most Sixes Record in World Cup Knockout
Iyer's eight sixes en route to his century put him on par with Ponting and Gilchrist's record for the most number of sixers in a CWC semifinal or final.

Team India put up a massive total of 397 runs against New Zealand in the semifinal of the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Tons from Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer bolstered India to the mammoth score after Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill gave the men in blue a quick start.

Iyer’s 105 off just 70 deliveries was the fastest ton in a World Cup knockout fixture as he also levelled a distinct record held by Australians.

Iyer’s eight sixes en route to his century put him on par with Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist’s record for the most number of sixers in a CWC semifinal or final.

The World CUp winning Australian captain achieved the feat in the final of the 2003 edition against India, while the celebrated wicketkeeper-batsman Gilchrist emulated his skipper in the final of the 2007 edition against Sri Lanka.

India won the toss and opted to have a bat first as Rohit’s 47 off just 29 deliveries and Gill’s 72 runs before he retired hurt provided the hosts a lighting start to the game. Rohit was sent back to the pavilion by Tim Southee and Kohli walked in and took guard on a day that would go down in the history books.

Kohli brought up his 50th century and went past Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 tons in the 50-over format of the game as he also became the first player in World Cup history to cross the 700-run mark in a single edition of the blue ribbon event.

Kohli’s 117 runs off 113 balls took his runs tally at the tournament to 711 runs as he stands atop the table in the race for the golden bat. Southee was yet again responsible for another scalp as he sent Kohli back to the hut in the 44th over.

Wicketkeeper-batsman KL Rahul chipped in with an unbeaten 39 runs, while Iyer continued his onslaught against the Kiwi bowlers. The Mumbai-kar was dismissed by Trent Boult before Southee claimed his three-wicket haul on the day with his scalp of Suryakumar Yadav.

Gill came back out on the field to continue his innings as he finished unbeaten at 80 runs off66 deliveries to help the men in blue set a huge total for the Kiwis to try and chase for a spot in the summit clash of the ICC showpiece.
