'16 Out of 17 Players are International Cricketers': Ganguly Hopes to See DC Perform Well in WPL 2024

Delhi Capitals (DC) Director of Cricket, Sourav Ganguly believes that the team will do well in the forthcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL), given the fact that 16 out of 17 players in the squad have played international cricket. The runners-up of the previous edition bought three players in the mini-auction, held in Mumbai on Saturday.

The franchise roped in Australian all-rounder Annabel Sutherland for a whopping amount of INR 2 crore. The likes of Ashwini Kashyap and Arpana Mondal were bought for their base prices worth INR 10 lakh.

Speaking with DC TV, Ganguly said the team management entered the auction well-prepared and got what they wanted.

“The coaches wanted Sutherland, Ashwini Kumari and a keeper as well. That’s what we had discussed in the auction and we got it. The squad has been good last year as well and this time, it’s an addition. They rate her very highly and hopefully, we’ll play well as we did last year,” Ganguly said.

The former Indian skipper said several players who joined the side last year have gone a notch above, becoming international cricketers which would give the franchise in the forthcoming edition of the tournament.

“That’s very difficult to say [Team’s strength in comparison to other sides]. The T20 is such a format, so the differences between side is not that much. You need one or two players to play well. So, from that point of view, it’s a hard thing to say and it’s a wrong thing to do as well. Because some teams play beyond expectations,” Ganguly said.

“But as I said, we are a good side and it’s a continuity of players who have performed and our Indian players are well. Some of them who were part of us last year are now gone a step higher to be in the national team. So, that’s also an additional advantage.

“Of the 17 we have, 16 are international players including Indian and overseas. So, hopefully, they will play well,” Ganguly concluded.
