The candidates have been selected to bring in a new generation of leadership and fresh ideas, Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who is Karnataka poll in-charge for the party, said addressing the press conference in New Delhi.

Announcing the names, BJP’s Karnataka in-charge Arun Singh said 52 of the 189 candidates are new faces and eight are women. Thirty-two candidates belong to OBCs, 30 Scheduled Castes and 16 Scheduled Tribes.
Among candidates named in the first list, nine are doctors, five advocates, three academicians, one retired IAS officer, one retired IPS officer, three retired government employees and eight social activists, he added.
The period for filing nominations begins on April 13 and will continue till April 20. The BJP aims to retain power in the southern state by winning a majority in the 224-seat assembly.
Top Highlights From BJP’s First List of Candidates
- The party fielded 52 new faces in the May 10 elections and 76 are from OBCs/SC/ST communities.
- As many as 51 tickets have been given to Lingayat candidates and 41 to Vokkaligas.
- CM Basavaraj Bommai will contest from the Shiggaon constituency.
- BJP veteran BS Yediyurappa’s son BY Vijayendra is in the fray from his father’s Shikaripiur seat.
- State Minister B Sriramulu, who was sitting MLA from Molakalmuru, will contest from the Bellary Rural seat this time.
- Revenue Minister R Ashoka will contest from two seats– Padmanabhanagar and Kanakapura. He will face Karnataka Congress president DK Shivakumar in Kanakapura.
- BJP national general secretary C T Ravi will contest from his traditional Chikmagalur seat.
- Health Minister Dr Sudhakar K will seek election from the Chikkaballapur seat while Minister Dr Ashwathnarayan CN will be in the fray from the Malleshwaram seat.
- Senior minister V Somanna, who is a sitting MLA from Govindaraja Nagar in Bangalore, will take on Congress veteran Siddaramaiah from the Varuna constituency.
- The BJP fielded former Bengaluru commissioner Bhaskar Rao in Chamarajpet.
