Narendra Modi Speech LIVE: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the first Independence Day speech of his second term, said the government’s decision to repeal Article 370 was a step towards fulfilling Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s dream. Modi said the country had finally achieved the goal of One Nation, One Constitution and every citizen could proudly say the same.

Hailing the decision, Modi said: “The government is known for not ignoring problems. What couldn’t be done in the last 70 years, the new government did in the first 70 days with both Houses passing it with 2-3rds majority.” He added, “The dreams and aspirations of people of Ladakh and J&K need to be fulfilled and 130 crore people came together for that.”

“The women of Jammu and Kashmir should get their rights. My Dalit brothers should get their rights. In all parts of India, they get the necessary benefits. The new system in place is for the direct benefit of people on the ground,” he said.

The Prime Minister also hailed the decision to abolish Triple Talaq, saying the government had provided justice to all Muslim women. “We, as the government, are trying to remove problems from its roots. You must have seen that the sword of triple talaq hung low on our Muslim sisters and mothers. It did not let them live with freedom. Many Islamic nations had banned the law long back. But in India for some reason we did not eradicate it.

“If we can raise our voice against the practice of Sati, we thought why can’t we raise our voice against Triple Talaq? Keeping up the spirit of democracy, the spirit of Baba Saheb Ambedkar we abolished this law.”

Modi began his speech by expressing condolence to those who lost their lives in floods that have battered the country. This is PM Modi’s sixth straight Independence Day speech. Earlier, Modi paid tributes to Mahatama Gandhi at Rajghat and then inspected the guard of honour.
