Rachin Ravindra Surpasses Sachin Tendulkar's Milestone, Records Most Runs by Debutant in World Cup History
Rachin Ravindra surpassed Sachin Tendulkar's milestone and became the highest run getter in 48-year-old history of World Cup by a debutant.

Rachin Ravindra is just 23 but the youngster has already made it a habit to break records for fun. On Thursday, the New Zealand opener surpassed yet another milestone of Sachin Tendulkar, and he also etched his name in the history books by scoring the most runs ever by a debutant in World Cup history.

Ravindra also surpassed Quinton de Kock with his 42-run knock to become the leading run-scorer in the ODI World Cup 2023, with Virat Kohli third in the Golden Bat race.

Chasing Sri Lanka’s 172-run target at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Ravindra and Devon Conway gave New Zealand an explosive start. Rachin has set the stage on fire in his maiden World Cup and achieved a glorious feat against the Lankan Lions.

England’s Jonny Bairstow had scored 532 runs in 2019, creating the record for scoring the most runs in debut World Cup, but Ravindra went past the Englishman’s tally on November 9 courtesy of his latest 42-run effort.

Rachin Ravindra surpassed Bairstow’s 532-run record, as he went past the 550-run mark during the 2023 World Cup, also overtaking De Kock in the leading run scorers’ list.

And that’s not all, Rachin has already surpassed a few records of the Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar in his short career so far. The 23-year-old became the highest run scorer in a single edition of the World Cup under the age of 25.

Tendulkar had scored 523 runs in the 1996 World Cup which was his debut World Cup in India colours, while Ravindra has aggregated more runs than Sachin while being under the age of 25.

Needing 172 runs to win and cement their stance for the World Cup semifinals, Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway’s opening stand of 86 helped the Kiwis almost nearly on the cusp of the knockouts. The Black Caps had won their first four matches, but after losing their next four games, the fixture against Sri Lanka became a must-win tie.

However, the Lankan Lions totally imploded against New Zealand, so much so that the 10th wicket partnership of 43 runs between Dilshan Madushanka and Maheesh Theekshana was the highest by Sri Lanka.

A big win for the Kiwis would boost their Net Run Rate (NRR) making Pakistan and Afghanistan’s chances of reaching the semifinals nearly impossible.
