Schools, and professional colleges will remain shut today in Tamil Nadu's Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore districts amid heavy rainfall

Amid heavy rainfall, a holiday has been declared for schools, colleges, and all educational institutions in Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore district today, November 14, district collector Arun Thamburaj has announced. Educational institutes will also remain closed in Mayiladuthurai district, DC AP Mahabharathi announced, reported ANI.

“Holiday declared for educational institutions including professional colleges in Mayiladuthurai District on November 14, due to the forecast of heavy rainfall in the district,” district collector AP Mahabharathi said.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert across the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. As per the dept, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall (115.6 to 204.4 mm) is expected on November 13th and 14th.

Due to a cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Thailand, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the Southeast Bay of Bengal today which is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a Depression over Central and adjoining South Bay of Bengal around November 16, IMD has said.

Not just Tamil Nadu, thunderstorms and lightning/gusty winds have been predicted over Andhra Pradesh during November 13-15. Isolated heavy rainfall is also likely over Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry on November 14-15 and over Kerala on November 15-16. Light to moderate fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is very likely over Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the next seven days.

Several parts of Tamil Nadu have been experiencing heavy rainfall for the last few days. Schools were shut in several districts in Tamil Nadu due to heavy rains on November 9. Five districts including Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Madurai, Theni, and Dinidigul, as well as a few taluks in Nilgiris announced a holiday for schools. Due to the northeast monsoon or the winter monsoon, southern India has been witnessing heavy rainfall.
