Shubman Gill pulls Rohit Sharma's leg over dismissal against Bangladesh, asks Indian captain about winless streak against New Zealand in ICC events

Shubman Gill was seen pulling the leg of his Indian teammates in a behind-the-scenes video shared by the BCCI after India’s commanding 7-wicket win over Bangladesh in Pune on Thursday, October 20. Gill was seen asking Rohit whether he was angry by the manner of his dismissal against the Bangla Tigers. The Indian captain scored 48 runs as he missed out on a well-deserved half-century.

Gill also quizzed Rohit about India’s winless record against New Zealand since 2003, in ICC events, after which the Indian captain said that the team has been in good form and will try their best to snap that losing streak.

India’s 2019 World Cup semifinal defeat was a painful pill to swallow, but after that, they were beaten by the Kiwis in the final of WTC 2021 as well by Kane Williamson’s men.

Rohit though remains upbeat about India’s chances this time around. The Blackcaps have been in red-hot form in the 2023 ODI World Cup as well, they are sitting pretty atop the points table, with four wins, the same as India.

The video shared by BCCI shows Gill asking Rohit whether he was angry about the manner in which Rohit was dismissed against Bangladesh.

“Gussa kyu hona, haan wo maine galat mar diya, mujhe upar hi marna chahiye tha (Why should I get angry, yes I should have tried to Pull in the air, I tried to play it along the ground),” said Rohit.

Gill then says that he was quizzed by someone in the post-match press-conference that India haven’t won against New Zealand in ICC events since 2003.

“We’re playing good cricket, we will try out best,” said Rohit. Gill then says “Agle me pakka (next match we’ll win for sure?).”

“Hum aisa cricket nahi khelte hai ki hum pakka samjh jaye, ground pe jab pahuch jaye (We don’t play that kind of cricket that we can say for sure), we have to do what we are doing as a team,” replied the 36-year-old.

India and New Zealand have faced off against each other 9 times in the ODI World Cup history, winning five times, including the 2019 semifinal, while India have won only three times, the last win came way back in 2003.
