In a sad incident narrated by a YouTuber, a Redmi 6A smartphone reportedly exploded and killed a woman in the Delhi-NCR region. According to the tweet from a tech YouTuber, the aunt of a person was using the smartphone and had kept it near her face on a pillow while sleeping, and the smartphone exploded and reportedly claimed her life. Xiaomi has responded to the tweet saying that it is investigating the matter.
The YouTuber who goes by the name MD Talk YT claimed that the battery explosion killed the user and has also shared images of the smartphone’s condition. While the front panel looks completely bent and trashed, the back panel shows the smartphone’s battery has exploded. The tweet also includes a gruesome image of the woman, which shows her lying in a pool of blood on a bed. “Hi @RedmiIndia, @manukumarjain, @s_anuj Yesterday in Night my Aunty found dead, she was using Redmi 6A, she was sleeping & she kept the phone near her face on pillow side & after sometime her phone blast. It’s a bad time for us. It’s a responsibility of a brand to support," the tweet from the YouTuber named Manjeet said.
We at News18.com got in touch with both the YouTuber and Xiaomi. We will update the story with responses from both parties. Xiaomi, in a response to the tweet on Twitter, said that its team is trying to get in touch with the affected family, and determine the cause of the incident. In a second tweet, the YouTuber says that the affected family comes from simple means and the victim’s son is in the army. “Her family is so simple, her son is in the Indian Army. They don’t know so much. She only uses her phone just for calling & watching YouTube.
Now if brand didn’t accept their mistakes, don’t take responsibility directly, if a family has to fight for justice then what’s the use ."
Now, this is not the first time we have heard about smartphone’s exploding. A OnePlus Nord 2 had earlier this year exploded when a user was on a call, injuring him in the face and hands. Earlier, another OnePlus Nord 2 explosion invited a legal tussle between OnePlus and the user, who happened to be a lawyer and reportedly suffered injuries after the smartphone exploded in his jacket’s pocket.
While there have been instances of injuries to users due to a smartphone exploding, this is for the first time we are coming across an incident in India where a smartphone explosion has apparently killed the user. In this case, we can’t confirm as to what caused the smartphone to explode, or if that was the reason for the injuries seen in the images shared by the YouTuber. However, it is not the first time a Redmi smartphone has exploded. Back in 2019, a Redmi 9A had exploded in a user’s pocket in Andhra Pradesh, resulting in minor injuries.
This is a developing story and we will update it with further information.
