Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the importance of skill development and its impact on India’s youth and economy at the ‘Kaushal Deekshant Samaroh’ on Thursday.

“Every country has different types of resources, but utilising the power of youth is needed. And the more the young generation is powerful, the more the country prospers. We are preparing our youth to take advantage of new opportunities through skilling and education,” PM Modi said at the event.

He also mentioned India’s remarkable achievements, including record-breaking goods exports, including defence and manufacturing, and pointed out the growth of opportunities in space, start-ups, drones, electric vehicles, semiconductors, and other fields for young Indians. “This is going to be India’s time, and the reason is India’s young population. While in many countries, the old population is growing, India has the advantage of having a huge young population. The entire world is looking at India for skilled youths,” Modi added.

He further shared India’s successful proposal for Global Skill Mapping at the G20 summit, an initiative to enhance opportunities for the country’s youth on the global stage. “We understood the importance of skills, and we developed a separate Ministry for Skilling and allotted a separate budget for the ministry. India is investing heavily in skill development now,” Modi noted.

Modi commended the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), which has empowered 1.5 crore youths through training programs. He also mentioned the establishment of new skill centres near industrial clusters, which bridge the gap between industry requirements and the skill sets of the youth, thus facilitating employment.

Furthermore, he stressed the need for continuous skilling, upskilling, and reskilling to keep up with rapidly changing demands and job trends. He highlighted the establishment and modernisation of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) as crucial steps towards providing efficient and high-quality training.

PM Modi also underlined the inclusion of women in the skilling process, particularly in drone technology, through the Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana. Traditional skills are integrated with modern technology, equipping women with the tools to thrive in emerging sectors.

Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Rajeev Chandrasekhar echoed PM’s sentiment, calling the significance of skill development a “passport to prosperity” for young Indians. “Coming years are full of opportunities for young Indians,” Chandrasekhar added.

Earlier, speaking at Amity University, Chandrasekhar stressed the need for students to acquire additional skills alongside their academic degrees such as programming, coding, and digital design skills. He urged the youth to proactively prepare themselves for India’s vast array of opportunities.

However, statements from the central ministers and the Prime Minister underscored that with the government’s commitment and enthusiasm of the country’s youth, India is poised to harness the power of its skilled workforce to usher in an era of unparalleled progress and prosperity.
