New Delhi: The second phase of Assembly elections in Manipur witnessed more than 85 per cent turnout on Thursday. According to Election Commission sources, the second phase of voting in the state passed of peacefully.
"Over 85 per cent of the electorate cast their ballot in the second phase of Assembly polls in Manipur at 827 polling stations in 29 Assembly constituencies," PTI quoted Deputy Election Commissioner J P Prakash as saying.
Interestingly, the second phase of polling in this tiny north-eastern state was conducted amid incessant rains. Yet, the voters turned up in large numbers at polling booths to exercise their franchise. Polling was held in Imphal East, Imphal West and Bishenpur districts on Wednesday.
"No untoward incident has been reported so far," Prakash said. He said people were casting their votes even at 1800 hours as those who had arrived at the polling stations before the scheduled end of the polling time had to be allowed to exercise their franchise.
"The voting percentage would be in the band of 85 per cent to 90 per cent," Prakash said, adding that Manipur has traditionally witnessed a large turnout. Ninety per cent voters had cast their ballot in the last Assembly elections.
A total of 7.39 lakh voters, including 3.8 lakh women, were eligible to cast their votes this year. Altogether 198 polling stations have been placed under the hyper-sensitive category and 395 under sensitive category, the sources said.
The third and final phase of polling will be held in 12 seats on February 23. Counting of votes would be taken up on February 27.
