Bhopal: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has given a call to RSS workers to 'embrace' weaker sections of society including tribal communities and Dalits.
Bhagwat made the comments at the inauguration of the RSS' Madhya Bharat Prant convention at Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday.
The statement of the RSS chief assumes significance as Madhya Pradesh is slated for elections later this year. He also shared the dais with Chief Minister Shivraj Chouhan.
He asked people from affluent sections of society to visit households of the poor on Makar Sankranti and offer them til-gud, offering normally exchanged on the festival in North India.
Bhagwat, especially after anti-Dalit violence at Bhima-Koregaon in Maharashtra recently, has been pressing for bridging the divide between the upper caste communities and the marginalised sections of society.
Addressing the gathering on Thursday, Bhagwat claimed that India might be home to people from various caste, creed and ethnicity but we should work for unity and integrity.
“We are one, a belief part of our culture but mere messages and preaching won’t do, this should be translated into action,” he said.
Stressing further on his SC/ST outreach initiatives, Bhagwat urged volunteers to greet everyone on Makar Sankranti including vegetable vendors, servants, barbers and so on. He urged them to do the same on Rakshabandhan and Diwali. “If the same is done till next year, the Ekatm ideology of Adi Shankaracharya would materialise,” he said.
Following Bhagwat’s statement, Chouhan from the dais announced that he will visit poor families on Makar Sankranti. Bhagwat, apart from meeting BJP officebearers and affiliate bodies of the RSS, also plans to meet commoners on Friday.
As the BJP eyeing fourth successive win in Madhya Pradesh faces assembly polls later this year, Bhagwat has been camping Madhya Pradesh apparently aiming to devise ways to rein in discontent from various sections of the society.
Bhagwat is presently camping in Vidisha, around 60km from Bhopal, as part of two-day RSS convention of Madhya Bharat Prant. Prior to this, he was engaged in number of activities at Ujjain, including the inauguration of Bharat Mata statue.
