J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday said that the Army and the Police that gunned down Hizbul Commander Burhan Wani did not know about his presence in the raid conducted by security forces on July 8 or else the situation could have been handled better.
"The Army and police officials told me that they just had information that three militants were hiding inside that house. If we had known earlier, the situation could have be handled better and a second chance could have been given," Mufti told reporters.
NC leader Junaid Mattoo slammed Mufti for her remarks and said that militant Burhan Wani's killing is full of contradictions.
The police themselves said that they were tapping Wani's phone for 3 days. The CM is a liar. She has rewarded those involved in the encounter with Rs. 10 lakh. When she was not CM she used to go to the funerals of these militants," Mattoo added.
Reacting to Mufti's remarks, BJP leader Hina Bhat said, "A militant's biodata is not needed to carry out the operation."
BJP leader Ravinder Rana too expressed surprise at Mufti's remarks and said that the army knew very well that Wani was in the house.
"Before shooting Wani, security forces had asked him to surrender. But he shot back. I don't know why the CM is saying this now," Rana said.
Intelligence sources in Delhi claim that the police came to know about it four hours later.
It is likely to have a far reaching political consequences in the state.
It is also being seen as an attempt to save the state police and government which are now being blamed for his death by the separatists.
