Lucknow: Former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin, who recently joined Congress, might be fielded by the party from Meerut or Moradabad seat in the coming general election.
“UPCC has identified these two seats for Mohammad Azharuddin for contesting the coming elections,” UPCC President Rita Bahuguna Joshi told newspersons in Lucknow on Friday.
Azharuddin would be sharing the dais with the Congress leaders in Meerut on March 23 in an election meeting, she said.
Azharuddin had expressed desire for entering into the fray from anywhere in Uttar Pradesh or Rajasthan, Joshi said, adding his secular face would be used by the party in campaigning.
The UPCC chief said that besides Azharuddin other celebrities like comedian Raju Srivastava, Bhojpuri film actor Ravi Kishan and Bollywood actress Nagma have also expressed their desire to contest and the decision on their candidature would be taken by the party high command.
Joshi said several retired IAS and IPS officers have joined the Congress in the recent past.
On whether Congress would be fielding its nominee from Lucknow, she said there is a view in the party that it should field its own candidate even though SP has announced the candidature of Sanjay Dutt.
The decision on the matter would be taken by the Congress president in the next meeting, Joshi added.
