Baalu has not committed any crime on gas deal: Deora
T R Baalu is being accused of committing ministerial impropriety.

New Delhi: Petroleum Minister Murli Deora has said that his colleague T R Baalu has not committed any crime by providing gas for companies owned by his family.

He has further said that people in public life keep getting requests for favours and there's absolutely nothing wrong with it.

The DMK leader and Road Transport Minister, T R Baalu is being accused of committing ministerial impropriety.

For the last few days the Opposition has been creating an uproar in Parliament demanding the resignation of Baalu and an explanation from the Prime Minister.

Deora said, “There is no nepotism here. I don’t know what nepotism you are talking about. Everyday we get requests from people. If somebody tells me this is a question of 2000 people losing their jobs I will call my people. I'll ask them the truth. We are here to help people not harass.”

The issue was raised after the Question Hour by Sushma Swaraj of the BJP who demanded to know when the Government would come out with a response as promised on Monday.

Before the Zero Hour began, Swaraj said the Leader of the Opposition (Jaswant Singh) had raised the issue yesterday and demanded a statement from the government. The Government had said it would come out with a ''response shortly.''

Ms Swaraj said the response should be given on Tuesday only because on Wednesday the Finance Bill would be discussed in the House and later the House would not function till May 4 because of holidays.

That would mean the issue would be discussed only on May 5 and that would be very late, she said and added that the government should respond today.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs V Narayansamy said the Government would announce on Tuesday itself when it would come out with a response.

Not convinced, the opposition members objected and wanted the response today. However, Deputy Chairman Rahman Khan said the government had assured that they would inform the House about the date today. ''Let us wait till then,'' he added.
