BJP pulls away from Cong in Chhattisgarh
BJP is leading in 36 constituencies and Congress in 33 in early trends.

Raipur: Ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading in 45 constituencies and opposition Congress is closing in with 42 in early trends after counting of votes began this morning for the 90-member Chhattisgarh Assembly elections.

Among the constituencies in which BJP is leading are Bhanupratapur, Kanker, Antagarh, Jaspur and Kunkuri while Congress is ahead in Bijapur and Balodabazar and four others.

Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh was leading by over 2200 votes in Rajnandgaon Assembly seat. Former Chief Minister Ajit Jogi has also taken initial lead in Marwahi seat.

Jogi was leading over his nearest rival Dhyan Sing Porte of the BJP by over 3000 votes after third round of counting in Marwahi seat.

Sitting Congress candidate Renu Jogi, wife of Ajit Jogi, was leading by over 1000 votes in Kota seat.

Chhattisgarh Assembly Speaker Prem Prakash Pandey of the BJP was leading by over 1500 votes from Bhilai seat.

Leader of Opposition Mahendra Karma was trailing by 942 votes against BJP's greenhorn Dheema Ram Mandami in Naxal-infested Dantewada.

State Congress President Dhanendra Sahu was trailing in Dhalsiwa in Raipur where BJP was leading in two other seats and Congress in one.

Congress candidates were leading in most of the seats of Durg and Dhamtari region while BJP nominees were leading in the seats of Bilaspur division.

In the state capital Raipur, BJP candidates were leading in most of the seats while in Bastar's Jagdalpur seat BJP candidate was ahead by over 2000 votes.

State Chief Electoral Officer Alok Shukla said here that counting was underway at a peaceful note in all the 17 counting centres.
