Cabinet likely to decide on Muslim quota today
Reservation in government jobs and educational institutions for Muslims has been a long-standing demand of the community.

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet is expected to meet on Thursday to discuss the Muslim reservation issue, specifically the provisions of a sub-quota for Muslims within the current 27 per cent reserved for the backward communities in government jobs and educational institutions.

An executive order is expected to be taken up for Cabinet approval.

Reservation in government jobs and educational institutions for Muslims has been a long-standing demand of the community. The demand became louder once the Sachar Committee Report's findings established that the Muslim community was extremely deprived. The committee also recommended giving a share to the Muslims in the reservation list for backward classes.

In the meantime, the Ranganath Mishra headed National Religious and Linguistic Minorities Commission, set up by the UPA-I government, recommended that 15 per cent quota for minorities in jobs and education, of which 10 per cent should be earmarked for backward Muslims.

Though the move is not inimical to the Congress, its timing can only be attributed to the crucial UP assembly elections. The Congress timetable speeded up once Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and BSP boss Mayawati said that quota should be increased by a constitutional amendment to include backward Muslims in it.
