New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday described as a "cruel joke" reports that Home Minister P Chidambaram will head the empowered group of ministers on telecom and called for making him a co-accused in the 2G spectrum allotment case.
BJP spokespeson Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters in New Delhi that Chidamaram had, along with former telecom minister A Raja, taken the decision on 2G spectrum allocation and hence there have been demands that he should be questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Prasad said the government had set aside constitutional propriety, parliamentary accountability and political integrity by deciding to make Chidambaram head of the empowered group of ministers.
The BJP spokesperson said Chidambaram's stated appointment, which has not yet been denied by the government, went against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's claim of maintaining a high level of integrity.
