Chidambaram withdraws remark on bypoll spark
The Minister recalled that he had said that the safety of the dam was the concern of not only Kerala but also Tamil Nadu.

Chennai: Union Home Minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Sunday withdrew his remarks linking the fears over the safety of Mullaiperiyar dam and the by-election to Piravom Assembly constituency in Kerala.

"Like some other speakers, I also made a passing reference to the forthcoming by-election. I take back that remark. That reference was not necessary and it was not my intention to hurt the feelings of anyone", Chidamabram said here in a statement.

Addressing a meeting organised to explain the stand of the TN Congress Committee on Mullaiperiyar dam issue on December 17, Chidambaram had made the remarks.

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Minister of State for power KC Venugopal and some other leaders took exception to the remark of Chidambaram.

The Minister recalled that he had said that the safety of the dam was the concern of not only Kerala but also Tamil Nadu.
