Kolkata: With only a day left for the declaration of the election results, Mizoram CM is confident of securing a full majority in the state despite the BJP’s strong presence in the northeast. Mizoram is the last bastion of the Congress in the region and chief minister Lal Thanhawla its only hope.
Votes polled in five states – Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Mizoram and Rajasthan will be counted on December 11 (Tuesday).
Speaking to News18, CM Lal Thanhawla said, “I am confident that the people are with me because our performance is the best in the country.”
Talking about his government’s achievements, he claimed that most of the sectors in Mizoram have achieved “self-sufficiency” and that the “GDP growth in the state is noticeable”.
“We are higher than the national average in terms of per capita income. In the education and jobs sector also, we are far ahead of other states. This is why people will once again elect us,” he said.
In a recent statement, BJP’s Amit Shah had said that this year people in Mizoram would celebrate Christmas under a non-Congress government.
Regarding the possibilities of a coalition government, he said, “Time will decide with whom we will form an alliance, if at all we have to.”
Apart from the economic growth and employment, Lal Thanhawla, vis-a-vis NRC, asserted that the people of Mizoram have secular credentials and "communal politics has no place there".
The BJP has vowed to implement National Register Citizens (NRC) in Mizoram if voted to power.
Lal Thanhawla was first elected as the Chief Minister of Mizoram in 1984 and is the longest serving CM of the state with a political career spanning over two decades.
In the 2013 elections, the Congress had won 34 seats, while its main opposition, the Mizo National Front (MNF) secured five seats and the Mizoram People’s Conference bagged only one.
Mizoram went to polls on November 28 and recorded 80 per cent voter’s turnout. The assembly has a total of 40 seats.
