Goa polls: Liquor worth Rs 90,000 seized
Excise Commissioner PS Reddy said that the raids were conducted at two places of North and South Goa.

Panaji: Goa's excise officials on Thursday conducted two raids and seized liquor worth Rs 90,000 which was allegedly meant for distribution during the ongoing election campaign.

Excise Commissioner PS Reddy said that the raids were conducted at two premises in Pernem taluka of North and Canacona of south Goa district wherein the Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) was stocked.

The raid at Pernem led to seizure of liquor worth Rs 50,000 while at Canacona, Rs 40,000 worth of liquor was found by excise officials who are currently busy conducting raids ahead of the state assembly election. However, in neither cases, the officials could get hold of the persons responsible for stocking liquor.

"We expect the accused to be arrested soon which will reveal for whom the liquor was brought," Reddy said.

He said that till date, right from the last week of December when election code of conduct was enforced, the department has confiscated liquor worth about Rs 15 lakh. "This is five times more than other poll-bound states like Punjab," he said. The excise department has formed flying squads in each of the talukas to conduct surprise checks.
