New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee has scotched all rumours of quitting saying he doesn't belong to any political party.
"I don't belong to any political party. So don't drag me into it. I am a Speaker, not a nominee of any political party," Chatterjee said.
When the Left parties gave their letter of withdrawal of support to President Pratibha Patil on Wednesday, the list of 60 Members of Parliament included Chattrejee's name.
Communist Party of India-Marxist General Secretary Prakash Karat on Wednesday refused to say whether Chatterjee would quit. “He will decide for himself and will take a decision,” he told a press conference.
Asked whether Chatterjee’s name was in the list, Karat said: "the list contains the names of all our MPs who have been elected to the Lok Sabha."
Chatterjee was elected to the Lok Sabha from Bolpur constituency in West Bengal on a CPI-M ticket.
