The Delhi High Court on Wednesday granted interim bail to Jawaharlal Nehru University students union president Kanhaiya Kumar in the sedition case against him. The court granted Kanhaiya bail on a personal bail bond of Rs 10,000 and asked him to co-operate in the Delhi Police's ongoing investigation.
Welcoming the decision, CPI-M General Secretary said that the entire matter was fabricated and called for a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe.
Here is the transcript of the interview:
CNN-IBN: Kanhaiya Kumar finally gets bail. He was accused of very serious charges, that is sedition. How would you describe this moment?
Sitaram Yechury: 'Satyameva Jayate', as the Prime Minister said but he said it wrongly. Finally truth prevails. And the truth of the matter is that the entire episode was a big fabrication. Now some justice has been done. There are other students also who have been held under same charge. That also must be cleared. Therefore, we are going to ask and I am very clear about it. I have said this in Parliament. We have been vindicated. Who is behind this fabrication?
CNN-IBN: They called you anti-national. BJP MLAs called you anti-national?
Sitaram Yechury: They still do and the threats they send. Even today, so many messages and calls have come. Well that is the only way that they can survive. This is the RSS troll machine as I call it. But the point is who is behind this fabrication? The tapes that they has provided as evidence, now it has been proved to have been doctored. The forensic laboratory. And who is behind this doctoring and this hysteria, who has whipped it up? And who has generated this case of an entire question of sedition. If there is sedition there is no question of getting any bail. So obviously that charge has fallen through. Given all this, accountability has to be ensured.
I said and I repeat, I suspect the government has said all this, fabricated all this, whipped up this hysteria in their efforts to communalise the country and its people so their political objective is served of converting our Secular Democratic Republic of India into what the RSS called the Hindu Rashtra. Somebody has to be accountable. And the Prime Minister who hailed this fabrication as Satyameva Jayate, will have to take the onus and ensure that accountability is done and culpability for this is pinned down.
CNN-IBN: Will you demand that a Joint House Panel probes this?
Sitaram Yechury: Well lets see what is the reaction of the government. Otherwise, we will surely talk to the other parties. This merits a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe.
CNN-IBN: We also heard slogans of Lal Salaam. And do think, this could be a moment to reignite the Left and advance the discourse of the Left in the country?
Sitaram Yechury: Well this is definitely has been a movement which has already re-ignited the Left. This will bolster the campaign the Left is doing. This will have an impact. Much of it will depend on how we carry it out both inside and outside Parliament. And we will do that.
