Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday took a dip in the Arabian Sea at the site where the submerged city of Dwarka is believed to be. He went into the deep sea and prayed at the site, which is considered to be the original residence of Hindu deity Krishna and an ancient city that was a hub of grandeur and prosperity.

“To pray in the city of Dwarka, which is immersed in the waters, was a very divine experience. I felt connected to an ancient era of spiritual grandeur and timeless devotion. May Bhagwan Shri Krishna bless us all,” said the prime minister in a post on X (formerly Twitter) after inaugurating Sudarshan Setu, India’s longest cable-stayed bridge in Gujarat’s Devbhumi Dwarka district.

Prime Minister Modi said he paid homage to Dwarka, a site that continues to captivate imaginations with its rich cultural and spiritual legacy. He said he also offered peacock feathers as a tribute to the “Dwarakadheesh”, or ‘the king of Dwarka’, which is another name for Krishna. He added that his experience under water was like a passage through time that evoked Dwarka’s glorious past and its association with one of the most revered Hindu gods.

“Whatever happens here happens with the permission of ‘Dwarakadheesh’. Today I went underwater, in the deep sea and prayed at the site where the submerged city of Dwarka is. In the past, I have had the privilege of visiting many pilgrimage sites in the country for the work of God. Today, I am experiencing the same divinity in Dwarka dham. I paid homage to Dwarka, a city that continues to captivate imaginations with its rich cultural and spiritual legacy. Underwater, I also offered peacock feathers as tribute,” the PM said at a gathering after laying the foundation stone of multiple development projects worth more than Rs 4,150 crore.

He further said the Sudarshan Setu, a four-lane bridge between Okha and Beyt Dwarka, is a marvel of engineering and students of structural engineering should also come and study it.

“The 2.32-km bridge, including 900 metres of central double span cable-stayed portion and a 2.45-km approach road, was constructed at a cost of Rs 979 crore. The four-lane 27.20 metre wide bridge has 2.50 metre wide footpaths on each side,” said an official release by the Devbhumi Dwarka administration.

Earlier, PM Modi also offered prayers at the Shri Beyt Dwarkadhish temple and will be holding a rally in Jamnagar as the day progresses.
