Poll panel clears name of new Chhattisgarh DGP
The Election Commission on Friday approved the name of A M Nawani.

Raipur: The Election Commission on Friday approved the name of A M Nawani as Chhattisgarh's new director general of police (DGP) in place of incumbent Vishwaranjan, officials said.

Chhattisgarh's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government on Tuesday received a letter from the Election Commission demanding Vishwaranjan's removal from the post ahead of the April 16 Lok Sabha poll in the state and asking for a list of names of senior police officers who could succeed him.

Official sources said the government Thursday recommended the names of Nawani and S K Paswan for the post although Chief Minister Raman Singh termed the Commission's decision as "one-sided and unfortunate".

The poll body's action followed its row with Vishwaranjan during the state Assembly poll in November 2008.

Vishwaranjan, a former additional director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) who took charge as police chief of the state in July 2007, had applied to the government for a three-month leave (March to May) in anticipation of the Election Commission's action.

The state government, which had first rejected his application saying it would affect the morale of the police fighting Maoist insurgents, approved the leave on Friday.
