New Delhi: Two months after formally taking charge as the Congress President, Rahul Gandhi has started to give final shape to his team.
The Congress Working Committee (CWC), highest decision making body in the party, appointed by Sonia Gandhi has been dissolved and the process to select a new one has been set into motion.
Rahul Gandhi has nominated a new steering committee to oversee nomination of members of the new CWC.
This steering committee will decide the contours of the party’s plenary session which is likely to be held in the second week of March in Delhi.
The session will endorse Rahul’s appointment as Congress President and also finalise and vet Rahul’s team.
For the steering committee, Rahul has drawn leaders from the senior lot, including former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, P Chidambaram, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Janardhan Dwivedi.
Rahul’s new team, post ratification from the All India Congress Committee, will be a mix of the old and new leaders.
News18 has learnt that Rahul’s team will consist of seniors like leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, former Defence Minister A K Antony, Anand Sharma, P Chidambaram and former political secretary to Sonia Gandhi Ahmed Patel.
This lot is valued for its experience and loyalty to the family. Also, some like Azad has got organisational skills necessary to build alliances ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.
In the last one month, Rahul has also set up several verticals which will work in coordination and make preparations for the next Lok Sabha polls.
Congress has set up a separate wing to tap people among working professionals, a data analytics centre and a research team for real time feed-back.
Rahul’s big focus is the Lok Sabha polls but the challenge before that would be to wrest victory in key states like Karnataka, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
