Bengaluru: Kannada film actress and former Congress MP Ramya is once again in the news for wrong reasons. According to local media reports, she has not fulfilled her promise of bearing the educational expenses of the children of a farmer who committed suicide in October 2015.
She had made the announcement in the presence of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi when he visited the family members of the unfortunate farmer on October 9, 2015 at Sanabadakoppalu in Mandya district. The Karnataka government has also gone back on its words by not paying Rs 5 lakh compensation to the family. Rahul Gandhi himself had asked Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to pay the compensation immediately.
Ramya, a former MP from Mandya, had accompanied Rahul Gandhi during his visit to the village. She had made a grand announcement that all educational expenses of the two children, Smitha studying in the class 6 and Sagar studying in class 5, would be borne by her. Rahul Gandhi had appreciated her "gesture".
However, Ramya has not even bothered to ring up the deceased farmer Lokesh's wife Shobha. Speaking to media persons, Shobha said that Ramya had not paid even a single paisa to her family. The local villagers have also expressed anger over the callousness of the actor-turned-politician.
A villager said, "Ramya did this for publicity. It was a gimmick. She was trying to impress Rahul Gandhi. She has no concern for the poor people."
When contacted to get her version, Ramya's phone was switched off.
