New Delhi: NCP chief Sharad Pawar might land himself into more trouble with his remark on the Adarsh Housing Society scam.
Speaking to CNN-IBN, the 73-year-old sought to give a clean chit to Ashok Chavan, Congress leader and former Maharashtra chief minister, saying that "allotting a flat to a close relative" was not a scam.
"I don't think Adarsh scam is a big deal. We should analyse the detailed report about the involvement of Ashok Chavan. The only allegation against him is that one of the flats was given to his close relative. I wouldn't call this a scam," Pawar said.
Chavan was accused by the CBI of approving additional floor space index for the housing society in return for two flats in the apartment for his relatives.
He was also charged with illegally approving allotment of 40 per cent of the flats to civilians when the society was meant only for Kargil war widows and defence personnel.
The Maharashtra Governor, however, refused sanction to prosecute Chavan saying there was not much evidence against him.
The CBI filed a petition in the special CBI court to drop Chavan's name from the FIR. The court, however, turned down the plea.
The CBI then filed a revision petition in the Bombay High Court to get the charges dropped against Chavan. A court decision is awaited.
