Congress bagged 42, while BJP managed 23 of 69 seats at stake.

New Delhi: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had the last laugh in Delhi Assembly Elections fighting anti-incumbency to steer the party to a record hat-trick on Monday, as the ruling Congress bagged 42 of the 69 seats at stake.

Majority of Dikshit's loyalists justified the faith reposed in them, romping home from their respective seats but the candidates whose nomination was opposed by her camp at the time of ticket distribution bit the dust in the polls.

For instance, two-time sitting MLA Bheeshma Sharma, a known detractor of Dikshit failed to retain his Ghonda seat in East Delhi which was wrested by BJP candidate Sahab Singh Chouhan.

Sharma's candidature was opposed "tooth and nail" by Dikshit's camp but a deft interference by DPCC chief J P Aggarwal ensured his entry in the last minute.

His name was not in the first list, which was leaked to media, prior to the official announcement.

Aggarwal's assertion of power during ticket distribution also allegedly strained the otherwise cordial relationship between the DPCC chief and Dikshit.

Sitting MLA Vijay Lochav, another Dikshit baiter, also failed to woo his voters in Bijwasan constituency and lost to Satprakash, a newcomer from BJP.

S C Vats, a Congress stalwart who embarassed the Congress government by recommending a CBI probe into power scam, also was out in the cold after the elections.

He lost to Shyamlal Garg in Shakur Basti, from where he had won last time.
