Ranchi: In a sudden development, a Jharkhand legislator quit the Assembly on Friday to offer Shibu Soren a second chance to fight a by-poll and retain his chief ministership, which he was set to lose after his defeat from Tamara.
Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) chief Soren may now test his might from Jamtara, as Vishnu Bhaiya - the legislator from the constituency - has resigned from the Assembly. Soren is quite popular in Jamtara.
"I have quit the state assembly to facilitate Shibu Soren to fight the Assembly election a second time. In the interest of the people of Jharkhand, Soren should remain chief minister," Bhaiya, who was last year suspended from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for anti-party activities, said.
A source in JMM said: "Soren has time to get elected to the state Assembly by February 27. If the central United Progressive Alliance leaders agree, then Soren will fight from the Jamtara Assembly seat."
Soren's victory may be easier from Jamtara. The seat comes under Santhal pargana from where he had many years ago fought against moneylenders as well as spearheaded the campaign for a separate state of Jharkhand to be carved out of Bihar.
Soren lost the Tamar Assembly election by 9,062 votes to Jharkhand Party candidate Raja Peter. He had taken over charge of the state on August 27 last year and, under a Constitutional obligation, needed to win an Assembly poll within six months to remain chief minister.
He is in New Delhi to discuss the political scenario of the state.
