Support to DMDK won't spoil Left unity: CPM
Too much should not be read into the party's decision to support the DMDK in the bypoll, Rangarajan said.

Tiruchy: Asserting that CPM's support to actor Vijaykanth's DMDK for Sankarankoil would not affect Left unity, party's Central committee member TK Rangarajan on Sunday indicated that bypoll support did not mean that the party was committed to going along with the DMDK for the Parliament elections too.

Playing down the party's stand with regard to the Sankarankoil bypoll, he said "Too much should not be read into the party's decision to support the DMDK in the bypoll."

He was reacting to a query whether the party's tie up with the DMDK would continue in the Lok Sabha elections too.

He also rejected charges that the party’s relationship with Vijaykanth's party was opportunistic.

Evading a direct reply to a query whether the party was open to an alliance with the AIADMK and DMK for the Parliament elections, he said, "We do not plan Lok Sabha poll alliance now. It will be decided as per the circumstances prevailing during the Parliament elections. Right now, the party’s concern is not Lok Sabha elections. At present, its major concern is people’s welfare."

Explaining the support to Vijaykanth's party for the bypoll, the CPM leader said it was only to avoid a split in opposition votes during the bypoll.

When asked for reasons for choosing the DMDK, which did not have much affinity with the Left ideology, he said, "For that matter, all the parties in Tamil Nadu, including the AIADMK and DMK, are bourgeoisie parties." The DMDK was a not a tested party and it was committed to fight for democracy in Assembly, besides sharing the CPM's concern on issues of price rise, power cuts, hike in milk price and bus fare, he explained.

Regarding the CPI’s refusal to back the DMDK, he said, "CPI has the right to make its own decisions." To a query on whether it would affect Left unity, he said the two parties would join hands in their fight against the Centre's economic policies as well as issues concerning people’s welfare.
