A day after Rajya Sabha chairman expressed unhappiness over absent MPs and Ministers in the house, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also lashed out at BJP MPs for missing in action during important discussions and debates.
At the BJP parliamentary party this morning PM told the MPs that their absence from Parliament was unacceptable. "PM was very unhappy and asked the BJP MPs - you are elected members of Parliament why is it so difficult to attend parliament?" a source told CNN-News18.
I can call any of you any time, PM reportedly told the MPs after parliamentary affairs minister Ananth Kumar raised the issue of lack of quorum in the House.
BJP subsequently issued a whip asking all MPs to be present in House. Lok sabha has taken up the finance bill for discussion and passage and absence of party MPs could spell trouble for the government. Important bills like GST are also likely to be placed before the two Houses of Parliament this week and government wants presence of all MPs to ensure smooth passage.
On Monday during question hour in Rajya Sabha both the MPs who were to ask the question, and the ministers who were supposed to reply were missing. Chairman Hamid Ansari had called it "an unusual situation."
Expressing his displeasure Ansari had said, "This is not a happy state of affairs." Congress MP Jairam Ramesh had also taken pot shots at government saying this was a case of "maximum ministers, minimum government and a shape of things to come."
In Lok Sabha too the quorum bell kept ringing post lunch as the chair waited for enough MPs to come to the house for proceedings to begin.
Seventy five NDA MPs in the Lower House are from Uttar Pradesh and many were missing after election related celebrations in UP, where BJP got an unprecedented 312 seats.
