Varun Gandhi to be in jail at least till Thursday
SC posted the hearing on Varun's petition to Thursday.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday asked Varun Gandhi if he was ready to give an undertaking that he would not create any volatile situation if freed from custody and posted the hearing on his petition to Thursday, which means he will spend at least three more days in jail.

A bench of Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice P Sathasivam, while hearing a petition by Varun challenging his detention under the National Security Act (NSA), asked his counsel Mukul Rohatagi, who readily agreed to give such an undertaking.

The Uttar Pradesh government's counsel Harish Salve, however, said that he will have to consult his client before giving a reply.

The NSA was invoked against Varun for delivering speeches with "communal overtones and for chaos created by him while surrendering before a court on March 28", the state government has earlier said in an affidavit before the Supreme Court.
