Bardhaman: A Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate was on Tuesday attacked allegedly by CPM cadres while he was campaigning in Raina assembly constituency in Burdwan district. The incident took place just a day after a TMC candidate was attacked and one party activist killed in the same district.
TMC candidate for the Raina seat Nepal Chandra Ghorai on Tuesday lodged an FIR with the police alleging he was attacked by CPM activists led by Haripada Santra while he was campaigning at Methopara at around 10 am.
Ghorai claimed that 10 of his supporters were injured when Santra and other CPM activists attacked them with lathis and other sharp edged weapons.
In the FIR lodged with the Madhavdighi police station Ghorai has named 12 CPM leaders, including Santra for attacking him and his supporters.
District Magistrate Omkar Singh Meena said he has ordered that the central para-military forces be deployed in the area. The Officer-in-Charge of the Madhavdinghi police station has rushed to the area along with central para military forces.
On Monday a TMC activist was killed when he tried to save party candidate for Jamuria assembly constituency Prabhat Chhatypadhyay from a band of assailants led by a local coal mafia at Barul village.
Assistant sub-inspector of Jamuria police station, Asit Mandal was suspended in connection with yesterday's killing of the TMC activist.
The DM also said that departmental proceedings have been initiated against the suspended ASI. TMC chief Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to visit Jamuria in the district on Tuesday to participate in a protest rally.
