New Delhi: Microsoft has issued an emergency patch for a major bug in Windows OS that could have allowed hackers remotely control the affected computer completely.
The bug, as mentioned by Microsoft in a security bulletin, could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted document or visits an untrusted webpage that contains embedded OpenType fonts.
Hackers could easily plant new malicious programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts on the computer with full user rights.
Although Microsoft has acknowledged that the vulnerability was public, it maintained that so far there had not been any known attacks through the loophole.
Windows users who have enabled automatic Windows Update, needn’t take extra action to fix the patch; others will be required to manually install it.
The security bug affects all supported versions of Windows, including Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1.
