Urban legends often originate from the wild fantasies of nervous and superstitious individuals. While sceptics may debunk many legends, it’s acknowledged that every myth contains a fraction of the truth. This logic may explain various reports of hauntings worldwide, including the nerve-wracking tale of the unfinished Kymlinge Metro Station in Stockholm, Sweden and the rumoured haunting of its rails by the Silverpilen, or Silver Arrow, train.
The construction of the partially above-ground metro station commenced as part of an urbanisation effort in the Kymlinge neighbourhood. However, development ceased after the majority of the structure was built due to intense suburbanisation elsewhere in Stockholm and efforts to preserve Kymlinge’s natural areas. Legend has it that the project was abandoned after workers witnessed something terrifying, deterring them from returning to the site.
Numerous stories surround Kymlinge Station, with the most famous involving the urban legend of Silverpilen, said to frequent the station. This silver ghost train has allegedly been sighted throughout the Stockholm Metro. Unlike other metro fleet members, Silverpilen retained its silver metal sheen, having never been painted green. It was utilised as a backup vehicle when the system was overloaded, making its sporadic appearances eerie for those who encountered it.
The genesis of this ghostly tale traces back to a young woman’s encounter on an old, silver-white train after a late-night party. She notices peculiar behaviour among fellow passengers as the train bypasses usual stops, finally halting at Kymlinge. Passengers seemingly walk through locked station doors, disappearing into thin air. The girl is later found in the Ursvik woods, either dead or insane, depending on the version of the story. It’s widely believed that Silverpilen transports the dead, with Kymlinge Station as their disembarkation point.
Some believe that boarding the Silver Arrow forever alters one’s existence. The train is said to be trapped in an endless cycle of time, circling the rails while the carriage slowly deteriorates. While the veracity of these tales remains uncertain, they serve as a deterrent to visiting the eerie metro station.
Urban legends like Silverpilen and Kymlinge Station blend reality with folklore, enchanting imaginations and instilling a sense of caution in those who hear them.
