How Pet Dogs Helped Mumbai Family Cope With a Tragedy: 'Taught Us to Be Happy Again'

Dogs, as the old saying goes, are humans’ best friends. And indeed, these furry companions often prove to be the most loyal and caring beings one could encounter. This sentiment was recently exemplified in a touching story shared by a woman residing in Mumbai. She recounted how her beloved pet dogs played a crucial role in helping her mother cope with a tragic loss and find joy once again.

Sharing her experience on ‘X’, under the username @Whyshalleee, the woman described the profound impact of her father’s passing due to cancer on her family, particularly her mother, a trained gynaecologist with over three decades of private practice. Reflecting on the initial days of mourning, she recalled, “Once he passed away, my mom was distraught.”

Living together in a tiny Mumbai apartment, communication between her and her mom became difficult. “My mom was grieving and I didn’t know how to reach out to her. Plus survivor guilt kicks you in the gut,” she explained. Then, their dog Bailey came into their lives unexpectedly when a friend had to move overseas and couldn’t take Bailey along.

“He made us communicate, though in those early days most of our communication was worrying about him. We began talking again, little by little. My mom laughed for the first time in 4 months after my dad’s death when B destroyed a remote,” she said. However, the family’s journey towards healing continued with the addition of another furry companion, Muffin, to their household, which further facilitated their healing process.

“B [Bailey] is our rock and M [Muffin]is the light of our lives. They taught us to be happy again,” she concluded, extending her wishes for National Pet Day on April 11.
