Anand Mahindra, the chairman of the Mahindra Group, renowned for his proactive engagement on social media, recently shared an innovative water-cleaning solution he came across, sparking interest and discussions. This latest post on the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter) showcases a water-cleaning robot used in China, triggering a wave of admiration and support from his followers. Mahindra expressed his eagerness to see similar innovations developed locally, urging startups to step forward with promising ideas. The post garnered significant attention, emphasising the growing need for sustainable solutions to address water pollution issues.
The shared video features an autonomous robot submerged in a water body, equipped with a slide-like structure that moves upwards towards the machine. Two rotators with attached brushes are positioned on each side of the robot. As the rotators move, they collect waste material on the water’s surface, transferring it onto the slide. The slide, equipped with holes, separates water from the waste material, which is then taken into the machine. This autonomous cleaning process efficiently addresses surface pollution in water bodies.
In response to the innovative water cleaning solution, Mahindra expressed his enthusiasm by writing, “Autonomous robot for cleaning rivers. Looks like it’s Chinese? We need to make these… right here… right now. If any startups are doing this… I’m ready to invest…”

A user highlighted the demand for such solutions in cities like Hyderabad with large water bodies, encouraging the production of these robots.
Hyderabad and other lake cities have huge demand for these, start making ones— Satyajith (@satyajithpinku) February 2, 2024
While applauding the innovation, users also raised practical concerns. A commenter emphasised the need for a collective effort, suggesting that companies pool their CSR budgets to support robotics startups working on similar projects. This approach could create a committed market for these innovative solutions, addressing the challenge of selling such products in India.
couldn’t agree more.however selling is the bigger problem than building – if csr budget across companies who want to support this is clubbed and offered to robotics startups to build this (sorta commitment to buy) then we might see it happen.
too many talented robotic…

A user shared information about an Indian startup named ClearBot already working on water cleaning robots in the country.
In the midst of the discussion, an user on social media emphasised, “Need of the hour Sir. Also need equipment/machines to clean hills and mountains where it’s a bit difficult to get back waste left by people during tracks and loitering. As it’s polluting green pastures and natural water streams/sources. Hope your R&D can work on this to make it possible.”
