It is believed that good music transcends language barriers. The success of the Hindi song ‘Chor’ is a testament to this adage. Recently, ‘Chor’ topped Spotify’s Viral 50 list. On Instagram alone, there are over 1.5 lakh reels created to the song, with celebrities like Sara Ali Khan and Mouni Roy using it in their videos. Chor was put on Spotify on December 15, 2023, but went viral on Instagram in 2024. Chor is written and performed by Justh, a former chartered accountant, who only goes by his pseudonym. On February 19, Justh shared a screenshot of ‘Chor’ leading the Spotify ranks on Instagram.

He wrote, “Chor is now the Global Number 1 Viral Song at the moment on Spotify. Like Worldwide Number 1 Viral Song at the moment. This is something else. I don’t know what to say. This is an independent release. No labels, no marketing money. No nothing. Just your love. Thank you so so much."

In an interview with the Indian Express, Justh mentioned that ‘Chor’ is inspired by Rabindranath Tagore and his works but insisted that he wants the listeners to have their own interpretation of the song. He explained, “The thing with Chor specifically, and hopefully with my other songs also, is that I have a feeling people would relate to it on different meanings at different periods of their life."

A day after the song was posted on Spotify, Justh shared its music video on YouTube. The video, shot by Prince Shah in Varanasi, has over 23 lakh views as of now.

While talking about choosing Varanasi to shoot the music video, the elusive artist told Indian Express, “It was more about capturing the spirit of that space because for me, whenever I’ve gone to Varanasi, it’s difficult for me to explain the essence of the place. The aim was to just kind of capture that and not just go and shoot Banaras. You never see that access where there are guards and where there are people taking a dip in the Ganga, etc."

Commenting on the music video, a fan from Tamil Nadu wrote, “I’m from Tamil Nadu and sadly I don’t understand/ speak Hindi, but when I hear this song it goes deep inside the heart and it’s so beautiful, probably the only Hindi song lyrics which I want to learn. Kudos to the composer." Another wrote, “I asked my grandma to listen to this song and she absolutely loved it. The understanding of the message and the peace on her face was so precious."
