Mamaearth Co-founder Ghazal Alagh Shares Three Reasons Why One Should Not Start A Business
Ghazal Alagh also asked people to share their thoughts on why someone should not start a business.

Awareness about starting a business has significantly increased over the past few decades. More and more people are now familiar with concepts such as equity, investments and the paperwork needed to run a business. The government has also launched initiatives to promote small businesses and incubate start-ups. Ghazal Alagh, co-founder of Mamaearth, recently shared three conditions that should not be the sole motivating factors behind starting a business. In an X post, she wrote:

1. “You’re just chasing money without a passion for long-term building.”

2. “You want to look and feel ‘cool’ because everyone is talking about it.”

3. “You don’t like to work hard and think you can hire people who will build for you.”

She also invited people to share their thoughts on why someone should not start a business. A user commented, “When vision is not big, the problem is not hard enough when you aren’t sure why you are doing it, when you are not mentally prepared to do whatever & however long it takes to do it.”

Mamaearth is a “toxin-free” skincare, haircare and baby care brand founded in 2016 by Varun and Ghazal Alagh. The husband-wife duo had raised $52 million from the global VC firm Sequoia Capital at a valuation of $1.2 billion, according to a 2023 report by Business Today. Currently, Mamaearth is considered one of India’s fastest-growing D2C brands.

In a 2022 interview with Outlook Business, Ghazal Alagh spoke about how she experienced gender discrimination when she started Mamaearth. She said, “I experienced gender bias in my own company when three members quit saying they would not work under me as my experience won’t add value to theirs.” She added, “I had a similar experience with our third-party manufacturing partners who couldn’t accept taking instructions from a woman. Even when we were looking for investors, we used to get questions like ‘isn’t there a male founder?’” She added that today their company has 51 per cent in their workforce.
